About Us

Social Work Consultation Services represents a model for the University’s vision for university/community
partnerships and civic engagement. Motivated social work faculty interested in addressing the human
service needs of Chester led to the creation of SWCS, a student field placement agency. The Center for
Social Work Education envisioned creating a community-based organization that would involve
undergraduate and graduate students in meeting the human service needs of the Chester community
while fulfilling their field internship and other curriculum requirements.
Founded in 2000, SWCS began as a collaborative partnership between Widener University’s Center for
Social Work Education and the Chester Education Foundation. During its first 9 years of operation, SWCS
staff and interns have made significant contributions to the local community. To date, over 100 Widener
University social work and clinical psychology students have completed internships at SWCS. And during
the past nine years, we have also provided free social work services to hundreds of community residents
each year.
During the past four years, in an effort to increase Widener University student involvement in the
Chester community, SWCS has provided service-learning opportunities to over 70 undergraduate
social work students. BSW students have volunteered each semester to work on various SWCS
programs and initiatives as part of the undergraduate social work course requirements.
